Welcome to Aunty Viv’s Soup Kitchen – a place of love, food, and community.
Aunty Viv, a beloved figure in the Hout Bay community, is the driving force behind Aunty Viv’s Soup Kitchen. Born and raised in Hangberg, a close-knit fishing community, she has been dedicated to serving others for most of her life. At 70 years old, her commitment to feeding those in need is nothing short of inspiring.
Her journey began in 2019 as a simple act of compassion. Using her limited pension and deep love for her community, Aunty Viv started cooking and sharing meals with those who needed them most. This selfless mission became even more crucial during the COVID-19 pandemic when demand surged, but her determination never wavered. Despite her own health challenges – including vision and mobility issues – she continues to pour her heart into each meal she prepares, ensuring that elderly community members, schoolchildren, and families have a warm meal to enjoy.
Aunty Viv’s dedication caught the attention of the community and motivated local residents, volunteers, and donors to join her mission. Over time, what started as a small kitchen in her home evolved into a registered non-profit organization, supported by those who believe in making a tangible difference. A young and passionate individual, was inspired by Aunty Viv’s story and took it upon herself to help spread the word and secure regular donations and helped the soup kitchen become an official NPO and is in the process of being registered as a Public Benefit Organization (PBO) to unlock more opportunities for support.
That's how powerful the ripple is of her commitment to serving the community.
However, Aunty Viv’s journey has not been without struggles. Consistent donations have always been a challenge, and when desperate times come, she is often forced to use her own pension to meet the growing need in the community. But her love and resilience inspire others to act and give back. The power of Aunty Viv’s compassion is undeniable – she has not only brought nourishment and hope to countless people but has also motivated others to do good.
